How I work: the VvO method by Romy Bitter

Vary, Nourish & Support

Eating well does not have to be about counting, weighing, tracking or constantly wondering whether you are doing it ‘right’. The way I see it, food should help you learn to listen to your body again and discover what you need.

With my VvO method (Variëren, Voeden & Ondersteunen) I work from three key pillars: Vary, Nourish and Support.

1

Vary

For me, a healthy eating pattern starts with variety. Not eating exactly the same thing every day, but mixing up different foods, colours, flavours and ways of cooking.

By varying what you eat, you give your body a broad base of nutrients. Think of different kinds of vegetables and fruit, protein sources, healthy fats, wholegrain products and other nourishing foods.

Not every plate or every meal needs to be perfectly balanced. What matters most is the bigger picture across the day and the week.

2

Nourish

Food is more than calories or macros. Your body needs nutrients to function, recover, provide energy and feel good.

That is why we look not only at how much you eat, but above all at what is on your plate and what your body gets from it. Instead of constantly counting calories or tracking your food, you learn to look at your plate and ask yourself:

  • What does my body need right now?
  • Is there enough nourishment in this meal?
  • Do I have a good combination of protein, fibre, fats and carbohydrates?
  • Which foods give me energy and keep me feeling full?

That way, eating well stops being a maths exercise and becomes a way to truly nourish your body.

3

Support

Sometimes food alone is not enough to meet all of your body's needs. That is where targeted supplements can be a valuable addition.

To me, supplements are not a replacement for healthy food and they are not a standard shopping list for everyone either. It is about smarter supplementing: looking at what you need and where support can genuinely add something.

This can take into account your eating pattern, lifestyle, personal situation and any signals or points of attention. Where appropriate, supplements can help to top up specific nutrients in a targeted way.

So the goal is not to take as many supplements as possible, but rather to choose deliberately what can support your body.

No rules, but learning to listen to your body

With the VvO method I want to move you away from the idea that you are constantly eating ‘right’ or ‘wrong’.

Vary to nourish broadly.
Nourish to give your body what it needs.
Support where extra help is wanted or needed.

To me, that is the strength of the VvO method: practical, personal and without unnecessary restrictions.
